Created after the Bedia Gold Chalice, which dates to 999 AD and is one of the most important examples of Georgian repoussé (chased metalwork) art. The chalice was donated to the Bedia Cathedral in Abkhazia by King Bagrat and his mother, who built the cathedral. We know this from the asomtavruli (Old Georgian majuscule) inscription on the chalice: "O Holy Mother of God, be an intercessor before your Son for Bagrat, King of the Abkhazians, and for his mother, Queen Gurandukht; for the donors of this chalice, the adorners of this altar, and the builders of this holy church. Amen." It is precisely this inscription, together with the engraving on the upper part of the chalice, that is used on our porcelain plates.
