The Mariam-Marta placemat draws from details of an 11th-century Byzantine manuscript miniature. The design is inspired by an illustration preserved in the National Library of France (BnF), depicting the Empress alongside her husband, the Byzantine Emperor.
Mariam-Marta was a Byzantine Empress and patron of culture who held significant political influence at both the Byzantine and Georgian royal courts. Bringing these historical manuscript fragments together, we translated the royal character of the era into an everyday accessory.
