The evolution of Georgia’s written language has produced three alphabets. All three alphabets coexist thanks to their different cultural and social functions, reflecting an aspect of Georgia’s diversity and identity. UNESCO has recognized three writing systems of the Georgian alphabet as the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Mkhedruli is the modern alphabet in use. The alphabets Mrglovani and Nuskhuri are predominately used by the community of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
